Doping at Winter Olympics

 

The Russian delegation at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics has announced that one of its athletes has failed a drug test.

Konstantin Vybornov, spokesman for the ”Olympic Athletes from Russia” team, stated the Russian delegation received an official notification from the International Olympic Committee about the positive drug test of one the Russian athletes. To confirm the positive test results, Vybronov said a ”B” sample taken from the athlete will be analyzed within 24 hours, but would not disclose the name of the athlete or the sport in which the athlete competed.

Already under sanctions for doping at the Sochi 2014 Olympics, resulting in Russian athletes having to undergo a series of drug testing prior to qualifying for this years games in which dozens were rejected, if the test results of the unknown athlete are confirmed this could lead to a great obstacle Russia would face in its efforts to be formally reinstated in time for the 2018 Winter Olympic games closing ceremony.

The IOC had previously stated that if Russia followed rules, including anti-doping regulations, the country could be reinstated prior to closing ceremonies at this years games.
