L.A. Fashion District Raided Over Counterfeit Makeup

ABC News

The Los Angeles Fashion District in downtown was raided by the Los Angeles Police Department on April 12th.  The officers investigated several merchants selling counterfeit makeup. Customers who purchased the knock off cosmetics got more than products for a rock bottom price. The makeup sold was unsanitary to say the least.

Per Pop Sugar the counterfeit lipsticks, eye shadows and mascaras to name a few items were covered in bacteria and human waste. Captain Marc Reina  from the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted “Busted! Major Task Force hits 21 locations in the and nets $700,000 in Counterfeit cosmetics found to contain bacteria and human waste. The best price is not always the best deal!

Some of the make up brands knocked off were MAC, Kyle Jenner Lip Kits and Urban Decay.  They are considered prestige cosmetics. This means the manufacturer charges a premium price for their product. In some cases consumers pay just for the name. Also, prestige brands are often made with higher quality ingredients than mass market produced make up such as Cover Girl or Wet and Wild. Legitimate cosmetic companies (prestige and mass market) spend a lot of money to make sure their products comply to safety regulations. Knock offs just put something together quickly and put them in the same boxes as the real makeup. The public thinks they are getting a deal from a prestige cosmetic company.

The items collected by the LA Police Department were worth $700,000. Per the Los Angeles ABC affiliate KDOC, customers who bought the fake cosmetics called the actual cosmetic companies to complain about skin issues  and reactions after using their products.  The information was forwarded to the Los Angels Police Department for investigation. Also per KDOC, 21 businesses were investigated and six people were arrested.
